Nature preserve meteor shower viewing planned

The Mineola Nature Preserve in conjunction with the Astronomical Society of East Texas will sponsor a viewing of the Perseids Meteor Shower at the Nature Preserve on Saturday evening, Aug. 12 from dark until midnight in the east parking lot.

Parking is on the west side. The event is free and open to all. Participants may want to bring a blanket or reclining lawn chair and binoculars. Telescopes will be available to view other celestial objects also.

With respect for the recent weather and the possibility of mosquitoes, bring only repellent wipes – no sprays. Also no smoking is allowed.

This is a weather permitting event. If the skies are too cloudy, the event will be canceled. A cancellation notice will be posted on the society’s website, via this email:, a sign at the preserve entrance stating “NO STAR GAZING” or text 903-520-7338.
