Old and new events on tap

It will be a busy few days Sunday through Tuesday as some traditional and some new events take place.

The Promise of Peace Gardens is bringing the Okapalooza to Wood County.

The event has been held in Dallas, but organizer Elisabeth Dry has relocated here.

The event is set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mineola Nature Preserve.

Celebrity chefs will prepare numerous items for attendees.

General admission tickets are $50 and can be purchased through Eventbrite.

The Mineola Historical Museum celebrates its 15th anniversary Monday along with the rededication of the cornerstone time capsule.

The capsule will be returned to the cornerstone with modern items at 5 p.m.

The anniversary celebration continues through 7 p.m. and includes refreshments.

The 9th Annual Tips for Tots fundraiser event benefiting the  Wood County Child Protection & Welfare Board to support foster children of Wood County will be held Monday.

Dinner will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. with the auction at 6:30 p.m. at the Winnsboro Civic Center, 915 Wheeler Dr.

The dinner is catered by Seth’s Lake Fork Creek Steak and Seafood.

Celebrity waiters will compete for Top Tip Getter as part of the fundraising effort.

Cost is $25 per person. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25. Both are available at the door.

Those decorated hay bales seen around town are a new wrinkle for a longtime Mineola tradition.

The bales are a part of the Mineola Hay Show which will celebrates its 58th annual event on Tuesday.

The winner of the decorated bale contest will be revealed at the show, which takes place at the Mineola Civic Center at 5:30 p.m.

That’s also when the winners of the hay show will be named.

Then all the entries will be auctioned, along with some fabulous prizes, all to raise money in support of the Mineola school agriculture program.
