One AGISD neighbor objects to plans closing part of county road

One neighbor of Alba-Golden schools is objecting to the district’s plan to close a section of county road behind the football stadium.

Kim Morris, who owns property along County Road 2377 adjacent to the newly-acquired school property north of the present campus, said she objected because it would close the road to commercial traffic, including trucks hauling produce for the East Texas Food Bank.

Morris spoke during a public hearing Tuesday morning before Wood County commissioners.

She said that she also hopes the district will address drainage issues at the football field that can cause her front yard to flood after heavy rains.

AGISD Superintendent Shelby Davidson asked that the road be closed to accommodate plans to expand the stadium to include visitors bleachers and for any future expansion of the campus.

He said it will also help with safety for students being picked up after school.

He said the district plans to fence the closed area.

Precinct Two Commissioner Jerry Gaskill questioned how vehicles could turn around when encountering the closed road, suggesting some sort of turn around be constructed.

Morris said the trash truck would need to be able to turn around.

“The school should be responsible for (that),” said Precinct Four Commissioner Russell Acker.

Davidson said the school owns property on both sides of the road and that should not be a problem to accommodate.

Gaskill said he wouldn’t want students to have to cross a county road if the campus is expanded.

Commissioners will make a decision on the district’s request at the next regular meeting.
