Promotions begin for Lake Fork bass tourney, festival

Expect to see promotion of the Lake Fork Family Fest and Bassmasters tournament at Lake Fork Feb. 29-March 3 beginning this week.

The Wood County Economic Development Commission, sponsor for both events, laid out some of those plans at its monthly meeting last week in Quitman.

Print advertising kicks off this week and the Monitor and 2-3 other publications.

Billboards are going up along Interstate 20 in Longview, Interstate 30 in Sulphur Springs, Hwy. 154 in Yantis and an electronic evolving billboard in Emory.

A one-page website, lakeforkfamilyfest.com, is going up with information about the event.

Counter cards are bing produced to distribute to area businesses.

Social media event pages have been created, and email blasts will be going out.

One over-the-road banner is planned for Hwy. 37 in Quitman.

The festival will take place on the weekend, March 2-3, and is co-sponsored by the Quitman Pilot Club.

The board discussed rotating the sponsorship among local non-profits in future years.

The festival is planned to be held every year regardless of whether Bassmasters has a Lake Fork event, possibly in conjunction with a crappie tournament.

The board also discussed whether to sponsor an event on the day of the total eclipse Monday, April 8 at the Sabine River Authority’s Caney Point recreation facility on Lake Fork.

WCEDC Executive Director Christine Thomas reviewed progress on the new strategic plan being developed by DADCO.

The final draft is nearing completion and is expected to be presented in the next month.

Chairman Tom Keenan said the plan should be a vision from county leadership  about what the county should look like in 10 years.

The board’s job will be to go into the communities and share that vision in order to achieve their buy in.

Thomas said she is coordinating with the workforce efforts through Jarvis Christian University.

A business plan for the Wood County airport is being developed and is to be presented at the next WCEDC meeting.

A plaque of appreciation was presented to outgoing director Jim Berry, who will continue on the advisory board.

Suggestions were sought for a director to fill the post.
