Quitman Bulldogs come up short to district-leading Chapel Hill Red Devils

The Quitman Bulldogs gave 8th ranked Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill a fight, but the Red Devil defense held the Bulldogs to 14 points in the final half while recording a 44-33 win to remain in first place in district 13-3A. 

Chapel Hill raced to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter and the teams fought evenly the final three quarters. The Red Devils held a 5-0 lead in the early going, but Quitman’s Landon Richey scored on a great assist from Payton Sapp and Brady Floyd hit a bucket with just over four minutes to go in the quarter cutting the lead to 5-4. 

After Quitman’s Hunter Jacobs hit a bucket to make the score 9-6, Chapel Hill went on an 8-0 run to go up 17-6 after one quarter. 

In the second period, the Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game with a great defensive effort. Floyd led the offense in the quarter scoring six points on one bucket and 4-4 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs held the Red Devils to just five points in the quarter and no scores in the final 3:50 of the half while Quitman hit eight straight points and closed the half down 22-19.

In the third quarter, Chapel Hill had a 12-10 advantage making it a 34-29 game with the final quarter to go. Chapel Hill clamped down on defense in the final quarter and took home the win. Braden Buchanan led the Red Devils in the final quarter scoring six of the team’s 10 points. Quitman got a basket from Floyd with 6:29 left making it a 34-29 Chapel Hill lead. 

The Bulldogs were not able to score again until 2:06 left in the game when Levi Thompson scored making it 41-33. The Red Devils hit their final free throw of the game to give them the final score.

Quitman was led in scoring by Floyd with 14 points and eight rebounds. Hunter Jacobs returned to the line-up after missing two games due to injury and had six points. Richey scored six points and had eight rebounds. Leading scorer Thompson was held to four points, but he contributed six rebounds.

The loss left the Bulldogs 3-3 in District 13-3A after the first half slate and in the fourth playoff spot behind Chapel Hill, Mineola and Winnsboro.
