Quitman church welcomes community

Despite big puddles in the parking lot and looming gray skies above, the turnout for the Faith Baptist Church of Quitman block party was considerable Saturday. 

Shouts of joy, chattering and Christian music came from all quarters at the block party, which was situated in Faith Baptist’s sizeable parking lot. The event, which has been held for seven years according to FBC pastor Mike Midkiff, was attended by over 200 people and was completely free for attendees.

“We do this kind of like end-of-school-year, have fun…family-oriented thing,” said Midkiff. “We started to do it at the end of the school year and just say ‘School’s out, let’s have fun, bring the community to our parking lot and just do something fun for them.’”

The block party was designed with many different stations to appeal to all ages. From a bona fide petting zoo to a musical chairs-esque “cake walk” to inflatable axe throwing, a food tent with free treats, face painting and balloon animals and much more, the party had many types of entertainment for the community. They also gave away door prizes such as gift cards, two flat-screen TVs and more.

The event took place right after the church had its VBS EXPRESS next door in the Faith Baptist Student Center. All told, Midkiff says that between 40 and 60 church members pitched in to help make the events happen.

“It’s kind of (giving) back to the community,” said Midkiff. “The favorite part is seeing the community here, and begin interacting with them… it’s just seeing people having fun!”
