Quitman falls to Rains in a battle

The final score may show a 48–32 Rains Wildcats win over the Quitman Lady Bulldogs on Friday, Dec. 12, but those in the stands know the game was much more of a defensive grind than the scoreboard suggests.

Quitman struck first when Autumn Cason drew a foul and knocked down a free throw to open the scoring. From there, Rains’ aggressive defense made things difficult for the Lady Bulldogs, forcing several turnovers in the opening half. Cason answered again to bring the score to 10-4, but Rains stayed one step ahead.

Late in the first quarter, Erin VanderSchaaf drove the lane for two, and Rains closed the quarter leading 16-6.

The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and continued to capitalize at the free throw line, stretching the lead to 21-6.

Quitman kept battling. After a missed shot by Laine Kelly, Cason fought through traffic for a rebound and scored under the basket drawing a foul to cut the score to 21-8. Free throws proved hard to come by for Quitman in the first half, but the Lady Bulldogs finished strong.

With about a minute left before halftime, Kaylin Sapp grabbed a rebound, pushed the ball up the floor and found Kinsley McCutcheon, who dished to Kelly for a smooth layup. Rains carried a 29-11 lead into the break.

Quitman came out of halftime with renewed energy, scoring first and turning up the defensive pressure. The Lady Bulldogs held Rains to just eight points in the third quarter while adding nine of their own, including a layup from Cason and a three-pointer by McCutcheon. Despite the effort, Rains still led 37-22 heading into the final quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs refused to quit. Kaylin Sapp hit a three, Addison Sapp added a free throw, and Quitman continued to hustle on defense. Rains edged Quitman 11-10 in the fourth quarter to seal the 48-32 win.

Cason led Quitman with 11 points and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Kelly pulled down seven rebounds, and Addison Sapp added three steals.

Coach Blake Hamrick said he was “very proud of the girls,” noting their effort, especially in the second half. “Rains is a very good team,” he said. “This was a good game for us going into district.”

The Lady Bulldogs will host their annual Holiday Invitational Tournament at Delbert Ballard Gymnasium on Dec. 29 and 30.
