Quitman ISD trustees approve $87,500 furniture purchase
New classroom furniture, updated handbooks and construction progress highlighted Monday’s Quitman ISD Board of Trustees meeting.
Trustees unanimously approved the purchase of $87,501.30 in new furniture for the elementary and junior high campuses through Lone Star Furnishings of Carrollton. The purchase includes $61,865 in furnishings for the junior high, with the remainder designated for the elementary campus.
Assistant Superintendent Bryan Hurst gave trustees a progress report on bond construction projects.
Hurst said construction remains on schedule despite recent rain delaying some work.
“Things were going at a fast pace, but they got slowed down a little bit by all the rain recently,” Hurst said.
Hurst said the junior high storm shelter is complete, while work continues on the girls locker rooms, baseball facilities and other bond projects.
“Everything is really taking shape,” Hurst said. “The girls locker rooms have been dry-walled, and if you get a look at the baseball field, it is coming along too with a bullpen already there and an awning going up.”
Hurst also reported chair-back seating has been installed in the middle section of Bud Moody Field. District enrollment currently stands at 1,082 students.
Elementary Principal Kelli Fortner and Junior High Principal Ashley Day presented revised student handbooks and the Student Code of Conduct for the 2026-27 school year. High School Principal Jeffery Tittle was unable to attend the meeting.
Fortner said the only handbook change affecting all three campuses involves the attendance policy.
“All three campuses have just one change,” Fortner said. “The only change is our attendance policy. We are going to three excused absences per semester. After that, it will be reported as an unexcused absence.”
The board approved the revised student handbooks, Student Code of Conduct and employee handbook. The board also approved the 2026-27 teacher, counselor and nurse pay scale and renewed the district’s insurance coverage through the Texas Association of School Boards.
In other business, trustees approved a memorandum of understanding with Tyler Junior College for the 2026-27 school year. The agreement continues the district’s partnership with Tyler Junior College for dual-credit and early college courses during the 2026-27 school year. Students will continue receiving both college letter grades and numerical grades for high school credit under the agreement.
Trustees accepted the monthly financial report, which showed the district has collected 95.1% of current property taxes, and approved updated authorized signatures for Origin Bank.
The board also approved the consent agenda, including June meeting minutes, monthly financial statements, check payments, a Texas Department of Agriculture donation letter, the district’s budget planning calendar and Bond Payment Application No. 4.
Trustees later entered executive session to discuss personnel matters and consult with the district’s attorney before adjourning the meeting.
