Quitman offense in tune to defeat Harmony 34-29
The Quitman Bulldogs opened district football Friday in a big way, traveling to Harmony and coming back to Wood County with a 34-29 victory.
Harmony is a perennial playoff team and advanced as far as the state semifinals just two seasons ago.
But Quitman could not be deterred.
Harmony grabbed the first quarter lead 7-0, but Quitman responded with a 7-yard scoring pass from Klayton Meadows to Jacob Breding to make it 7-6 early in the second period. The try for two and the lead was unsuccessful.
Harmony extended its lead with a pair of second-quarter rushing touchdowns to go up 22-6 at the half.
The Bulldogs narrowed the gap on a 1-yard Meadows run to make it 22-12, again with a try for two coming up short.
Late in the third quarter Meadows found Dakota Reynolds from 20-yards to make it a one-score game, 22-18. The extra point kick was no good.
The final minutes were a whirlwind as Quitman gained its first lead on a 2-yard run from Meadows, 24-22. Meadows then threw to Preston Flores for the extra points, making it 26-22 Quitman.
Harmony ended its scoring drought with a touchdown pass and extra point to go up 29-26.
Quitman worked down the field in the final minutes and got the winning points on a 1-yard Meadows run and Jacob Powell’s two-point run.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a home game with Edgewood, which opened its district schedule with a 48-44 win over Prairiland.
