The Quitman Bulldogs raised their season record to 16-7 and 2-0 in district action with a 44-41 win over Harmony Tuesday and a 72-33 romp at Winona Friday.

In Quitman on Tuesday, Levi Thompson came up with late heroics, scoring a bucket with 1.6 seconds to go. He was fouled and also made the free throw making it 44-41. To add a little more salt to Harmony’s wound, Thompson stole the inbounds pass by the Eagles to seal the Bulldog victory.

Thompson got the scoring started for Quitman with a triple just seconds into the opening quarter. Harmony hit three triples in the quarter and took a 13-12 lead after the first period. Payton Sapp also had a three-pointer in the quarter. Harmony built an eight point lead at 24-16, but the Bulldogs roared back in the final 1:45 of the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 25-24 halftime lead.

Thompson, Landon Richey and Jacobs led the comeback with Jacobs hitting a trey at the buzzer to take the lead. Richey had an outstanding game scoring 10 points on 4-4 shooting and a pair of free throws. The rugged post added seven rebounds.

In a slow third quarter, Quitman scored seven points to just six for Harmony as the Bulldogs held on to a slim 32-30 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs held their biggest lead of the night at 40-32 with 4:10 to go in the game. A scrappy Harmony squad did not give up and continued to fight back.

A Brandon Hayes free throw with 30 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a 41-39 lead. Harmony worked the ball around and hit a close in shot with just six ticks to go. Quitman never slowed down or called time-out as Thompson drove the length of the floor and laid in the go ahead bucket with 1.4 seconds left. Thompson made the inbounds steal and the game was over with the Bulldogs claiming an exciting 44-41 victory.

Thompson led Quitman with 17 points followed by Richey with 10 and Hunter Jacobs with seven.

On Friday, the Bulldogs left no doubt at Winona, streaking to a 17-0 first quarter lead and led 22-8 at the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs had a 32-17 edge at intermission.

Coach Cody Wilson emptied the bench during the contest as the Bulldogs came out in the third quarter to go on a 24-4 run giving them a commanding 56-21 lead. Quitman continued the hot run in the final quarter behind Sapp’s seven points and the final four coming from Brock Koch who hit a three-point shot and a free throw to make the final tally 72-33.

The Bulldogs posted nine three-point shots. Brady Floyd led the scoring with 19 points with Thompson adding 16. Thomas Sabedra and Sapp each had 10. Thompson pulled down nine rebounds while Richey and Floyd each had seven and Ethan Presley six.

The competition gets tougher this week with Mt. Vernon at home on Tuesday and on the road at Winnsboro Friday.
