Record families come to free food bank
The East Texas Food Bank’s mobile pantry set a record in Wood County last week, distributing food to 806 families at the Mineola location.
The two locations, in Quitman and Mineola, have combined recently to distribute to more than 1,300 families per month. (Some families come to both events.)
Distributions are held from 10-11:30 a.m. (while supplies last) at Bud Moody Stadium in Quitman on the third Wednesday and Meredith Memorial Stadium in Mineola on the last Thursday of the month.
Remaining dates this year are Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18 in Quitman.
The Mineola dates include Aug. 29, Sept. 26, Oct. 31 and Dec. 26 (no November distribution which falls on Thanksgiving).
There are no eligibility requirements and no paperwork to fill out.
Since distributions began, the Quitman site has served 14,936 families since December 2021 while Mineola has served 11,988 since October 2022.
For families financially qualified and have transportation, they can visit the ETFB Tyler Resource Center once a week to shop in TRC’s mini grocery store for various canned and packaged goods, produce along with a choice of a protein. (The free distributions generally do not include protein items.)
