Red Cross classes scheduled at pool

An aquatics training class is coming to Quitman May 19-22 designed for individuals under the direction of American Red Cross instructors at the Quitman Public Swimming Pool.

Pool manager Susan Rogers is excited to have the program come to the local pool. “We have tried for seven years to get classes here. We have had to go to Tyler, to Longview or Grand Saline for the training,” Rogers said. “Truthfully, the pool we have here is state-of-the-art. We have equipment here even some of the bigger cities don’t have.”

Participants must be 17 or older to take the course which costs $250. The comprehensive training includes lifeguarding, shallow water lifeguarding, aquatic attraction lifeguarding, first aid, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer and other safety-based courses and presentations.

Attendees must preregister at least five days before class begins and complete online orientation prior to the first class day.

The prerequisite for the lifeguard course is swimming 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing; treading water for two minutes using only the legs; and a 20-yard swim and brick recovery in 7 to 10 foot water and returning to the deck in one minute, 40 seconds.

Rogers is always looking for ways to make the pool experience in Quitman the best around. “We are also looking forward to getting new lighting so we can have night swimming at the pool,” Rogers added. “If I have lighting I can stay open until 9 p.m. We can do movie nights, adult night and so many more things.”

The classes will take four days to complete. Hours on Thursday and Friday will be 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The annual pool opening on Memorial Day has been a huge success over the years. The Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis Club sponsors opening day with a lot of swimming and plenty of hot dogs and drinks.
