Regional Cyclists in Special Olympics race toward state competition

Posted

The parking lot at Mineola High School’s football field buzzed with energy Saturday as about 50 athletes from across North Texas competed in the North Region Special Olympics cycling competition. Races ranged from quick 500-meter sprints to 25-kilometer endurance rides.

Athletes traveled from Tyler, Dallas/Fort Worth and Wichita Falls to take part in the event, which was run by Texas Special Olympics representative Kendall Lewis.

“It’s incredible to see these athletes push themselves and support one another,” Lewis said.

For many of the athletes, the Mineola race was an important step toward an even bigger goal. Competing at the regional level gave each of them the chance to advance to the state competition, scheduled April 30 through May 2 in Melissa.

About 25 volunteers and 20 coaches helped keep the day running smoothly, guiding racers and managing courses. Every athlete received a medal, celebrating their hard work and determination.

The event’s move from Fort Worth to Mineola gave the local community a chance to experience the excitement of Special Olympics firsthand.

By the final lap, it was clear: this day was about more than winning: it was about perseverance, teamwork and celebrating every cyclist who took to the course.
