Runners rally, students draw to mark 15 years in Alba
Art and history came together as students and community members celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Alba Public Library and Museum.
A student art exhibit, “Every Picture Tells a Story,” highlights charcoal drawings inspired by the people, places and history of Alba and nearby Golden. The project, led by art teacher Stephanie White of Alba-Golden Secondary, encouraged students to explore their community’s past through hands-on learning and creative expression.
Students visited the Alba Library and Museum, where they studied local history, including Alba’s roots as a once-thriving coal mining town. They then translated what they learned into artwork, using techniques such as shading, blending and contrast. Each piece is paired with written descriptions, allowing students to connect their artwork with the stories behind it.
The exhibit is part of the library and museum’s ongoing anniversary celebration, which showcases not only the importance of preserving history but also the role younger generations play in carrying those stories forward.
The celebration extended beyond the exhibit. The Friends of the Alba Public Library hosted a 5K run and walk Saturday morning as part of the festivities, drawing community members together in support of the library.
Proceeds from the event and other anniversary efforts are being used to fund a new sign and a mural planned for the building’s exterior. The mural is expected to highlight the community’s heritage and serve as a visual landmark for the city.
While known as a library, the facility offers much more. It houses a museum filled with local artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Alba’s past. One of its unique features is an Elvis Presley display, a favorite for visitors.
Organizers say the anniversary events are about more than marking a milestone. They aim to strengthen community ties, celebrate local culture and ensure preservation of Alba’s history for future generations.
Through art, education and community involvement, the Alba Public Library and Museum continues to serve as a cultural hub and a keeper of the town’s story.
