Sales tax income mixed in county

Alba, Quitman and Mineola had higher retail sales in August compared to a year ago, while Hawkins and Yantis saw slight declines and Winnsboro experienced a 5% drop.

The figures come from the monthly rebates reported by the state comptroller’s office. They reflect primarily sales in August, reported to the state in September and rebated to cities in October.

Wood County also saw a decline, as sales tax receipts were $237,872 compared to $242,840 a year ago, a drop of just over 2%.

The cities each collect a 1.5% tax on sales while the county collects a half percent on top of the state’s 6.25% tax.

The cities combined for October income totaling $529,280 compared to $518,534 at this time last year.

Alba had an increase of almost 22% to $34,700 for the month. For the first 10 months of the year the city has earned $305,855 in sales tax income, a gain of 12.64% from a year ago when $271,515 was received.

Mineola tax collections of $243,837 are up 3.1% for the month. The yearly total of $2,546,366 is up 4.5%

Quitman had a 5.34% increase for the month, rising from $76,932 a year ago to $81,046 in October 2023. The yearly total of $822,047 represents a 1.37% increase from last year’s $810,869.

Hawkins saw its rebate fall less than one percent to $40,399 for the month but for the year remains 18.2% ahead of 2022 with receipts totaling $428,955, up from $362,808 in 2022.

Yantis collections for the year of $106,868 are up 20% since last year. The monthly rebate fell 1.6% to $9,076 or a drop of $152.

Winnsboro sales generated October taxes of $120,650, a drop of 5% over last year. The yearly total is down by 7.25% from $1,334,614 in 2022 to the current $1,237,763.

For the year Wood County remains ahead of 2022 with income of $2,481,257. It was $2,402,610 a year ago.

The entities combined have received $7,929,112 in 2023.
