Sales tax revenues increase in all Wood County cities
Every Wood County city that collects sales taxes shows increased revenues compared to the same period last year.
But three of the six cities have lower total collections for the first four months of the year.
The April report provided by the state comptroller’s office is principally for taxes collected by retailers in February and reported to the state in March.
The six cities of Alba, Hawkins, Mineola, Quitman, Winnsboro and Yantis received $492,551 in April as their shares of taxes collected on retail sales.
That compares to $439,644 in April 2025.
The cities collect a 1.5% tax on retail sales, which is remitted to the state along with the 6.25% state sales tax and the half-cent Wood County sales tax.
Wood County saw its April tax receipts rise by almost 18% from last April, with $247,737 collected compared to $210,233 a year ago.
The seven entities combined had almost $100,00 in additional revenue for April at $740,290.
Collections for the first four months of the year are $2,271,558 for the six cities and $1,120,511 for the county. Both figures are up from last year’s $2,184,679 and $1,000,401, respectively.
Hawkins, Quitman and Mineola are ahead of last year’s pace.
Hawkins earned $43,153 in April for a 22% gain. The yearly total of $196,407 is up by more than $20,000.
Mineola has collected $1,094,923 in sales tax one-third of the way through the year, which is up 6.4%. The monthly rebate from the state of $231,701, is up by almost 10% from last year.
Quitman’s April receipts of $74,316 are 12.43% ahead of last year. The four-month total of $330,631 is 4.44% better than a year ago.
Alba had a 105% increase in revenues for April at $28,183. But for the year the city remains 5% behind 2025, with receipts totaling $127,139.
The drop in Winnsboro for the year is less than 1% at $471,137. The monthly total of $103,638 is almost 1.5% better than last year.
Yantis collected $11,558 in April for a gain of more than 22%. But that was not enough to bring the yearly revenue up to last year’s total, with $51,319 this year and $54,057 last year.
