Sales tax revenues increase throughout Wood county
Every Wood County city that collects sales taxes showed increased revenues in May compared to the same period last year.
However, two of the six cities still have lower total collections for the first five months of the year.
The May report provided by the state comptroller’s office is principally for taxes collected by retailers in March and reported to the state in April.
The six cities of Alba, Hawkins, Mineola, Quitman, Winnsboro and Yantis received $632,691.79 in May as their shares of taxes collected on retail sales.
That compares to $617,566.93 in May 2025.
The cities collect a 1.5% tax on retail sales, which is remitted to the state along with the 6.25% state sales tax and the half-cent Wood County sales tax.
Wood County saw its May tax receipts rise by more than 6% from last May, with $291,183.48 collected compared to $274,022.09 a year ago.
The seven entities combined received more than $32,000 in additional revenue for May at $923,875.27.
Collections for the first five months of the year are $2,904,250.46 for the six cities and $1,411,694.46 for the county. Both figures are up from last year’s $2,802,246.66 and $1,274,423.32, respectively.
