Sales tax rise continues
Overall sales tax collections for Wood County eclipsed last year’s total for November, according to the state comptroller’s office.
The six cities plus the county that collect taxes on retail sales recorded income of $871,199 for November compared to $843,934 in November 2024.
That amount was reached despite three cities reporting lower sales than a year ago. But with the county reporting more income and three cities recording gains in the 20% range, the total increased.
For the year, tax income is up by $450,000 from $8,733,473 last year to $9,183,322 for the first 11 months of the calendar year.
The taxes are primary from sales by merchants in September and reported to the state in October.
The six cities each collect a 1.5% tax on top of the state’s 6.25% tax, and the county collects an additional half-percent.
Alba saw a 14% drop with income of $33,837 for the month compared to $39,339 last year. For the year the city has earned $371,599, which is 7.7% better than last year’s $345,021.
Hawkins’ income jumped $10,000 to $54,639 for the month and is more than 10% ahead of last year’s 11-month total with receipts totaling $510,856.
Mineola saw its November rebate drop by 2.75% to $269,930 but remains 2.5% ahead for the year at $2,907,656 compared to $2,836,197 in 2024.
Quitman is up for the month by 21% and for the year by almost 7.5%, with monthly income of $83,266 and yearly income of $917,310.
Winnsboro had a slight decline in both categories, with the monthly total down 3.64% to $135,418 and the yearly total off by almost 2% at $1,347,920.
Yantis saw a 20% gain for November to $14,973 while the yearly total of $137,469 is ahead by 4.55%.
Wood County collections for November of $279,131 showed a 7.1% gain while the yearly total of $2,990,508 is up by 9.5%.
