Shoppers in Wood County paid more than $10 million in sales taxes during 2025, according to the final report of the year from the state comptroller’s office.

It marked the first time the county surpassed $10 million. It rose $465,000 from last year.

The report primarily represents taxes collected by businesses in October and reported to the state in November.

Six cities in the county collect a 1.5% tax on retail sales while Wood County collects 0.5%. Combined with the state’s 6.25%, that makes the tax rate 8.25% inside the cities.

Five of the cities reported lower sales tax receipts in December than a year ago, while Hawkins and Wood County saw double-digit increases.

For the seven entities, shoppers paid $825,139 in taxes compared to $804,041 in December 2024.

Most of the monthly declines were small – 2% or less, though Quitman did see its receipts fall by 12.2% for the month to $83,109.

For the year, all the cities and the county showed gains but Winnsboro, which fell by 1.75%.

Alba earned $31,327 for December, down by $107. For the year the city earned $402,829 compared to $376,349 last year for a 7% gain.

Hawkins’ December report showed an increase of more than 19% to $50,816. The city finished 11% ahead for the year at $561,672.

Mineola’s December rebate for $246,645 was down $4,000, but for the year the city finished with $3,154,301 in sales tax income, up just over 2%.

Despite the lower December rebate, Quitman ended the year with receipts totaling $1,001,120 for a 5.5% increase – the first time the city eclipsed $1 million in sales tax income.

Winnsboro’s December rebate fell by only $14 to $115,877. For the year the allocation declined by $27,000 to $1,463,798.

Yantis had a slight decline of 2% to $11,561 for the month but ended the year 4% ahead of 2024 with income totaling $149,031.

The county saw a jump of almost 13% to $289,203 for the month. The yearly total of $3,279,712 was an increase of almost 10%, surpassing $3 million for the first time.
