Runners, walkers and a few four-legged participants gathered in downtown Quitman on Saturday morning, March 14, for the Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis Club’s annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K. The St. Patrick’s Day-themed event serves as a fundraiser for the club’s community projects, which focus on improving the lives of children and supporting local needs.

The 3.1-mile course began downtown and wound through nearby neighborhoods. Participants of all ages and fitness levels were invited to take part, whether running, jogging or walking the route. The event maintained its reputation as a relaxed, family-friendly race that emphasized participation and community involvement as much as competition.

This year’s race included about 50 participants, along with 11 dogs and one child under 10. Most participants embraced the St. Patrick’s Day theme, wearing festive green attire.

Prizes were awarded for Best Dressed Human and Best Dressed Dog. The Best Dressed Dog award went to Bailey, an Irish Doodle therapy dog from Mineola, who attended with his owners Rod and Beth and his sister Sunny, also an Irish Doodle. Scott Thompson was named Best Dressed Human.

Several runners turned in strong performances. Dennis Kelly finished first and was the top male runner with a time of 21:46. His son, Ryan Kelly, placed second among the men in 23:36. Scott Thompson finished third in the men’s division in 24:31. In the women’s division, Stacie Thompson placed first in 23:52. Maylee Bowman finished second in 29:30, and Ruthie Bybee placed third in 31:10.

Race organizers expressed their appreciation to the Wood County Amateur Radio Association for monitoring the course and helping ensure the event ran safely and smoothly. Organizers also thanked the sponsors, volunteers and participants who helped make the event possible.

Following the race, participants gathered at Rockin S & S Grill for an informal after-party featuring brunch food and St. Patrick’s Day refreshments.
