Stargazing program set at Mineola Nature Preserve

Posted

The Mineola Nature Preserve, in conjunction with the Astronomical Society of East Texas, will host a free stargazing program Saturday, Oct. 17. Everyone is invited to attend.
The program will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and end around 11:30 p.m. at the amphitheater next to the pavilion. Participants are encouraged to arrive by 9 p.m. to become familiar with their surroundings.
The program will be a group exercise in identifying objects in the night sky that can be seen with binoculars or the naked eye. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars.
The event is weather permitting and will be canceled in the event of rain or cloud cover. A cancellation notice will be posted on the society’s website at www.asetexas.org/calendar and on its Facebook page, Astronomical Society of East Texas. A “No Star Gazing” sign will also be posted at the preserve entrance.
Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and wear clothing to protect against mosquitoes. Those bringing mosquito repellent are asked to use wipes rather than aerosol sprays.
Door prizes will be given away at the end of the program.
