Survival training proposed in new county sheriff’s posse plans

A meeting to form a new Wood County Sheriff’s Posse drew over 40 interested people last Wednesday evening in the courtroom at the Wood County Justice Center.

Sheriff Kelly Cole explained his vision on what the posse should be.

“What we are looking for the posse to be is citizens who are concerned and interested in volunteering to help us with some of the things we need to get done,” Cole said. “What I am saying is we may need someone to help us find a person who has walked away from a residence and might be lost in the woods. It would be a separate organization. We need to put a board together and organize in order to move forward from there.”

Cole talked about other responsibilities a posse could do. “This would not be just searching for people. We need volunteers to help out during emergencies such as a tornado or a bad storm,” Cole added.

The posse could be used to work traffic at the site of an accident or help with traffic and other duties at large events in the county. The posse would not be just citizens on horses but include members who can use their ATVs and four-wheel drive trucks and tractors possibly needed in certain situations. Posse members could also aid local volunteer firefighters when called upon.

Those in attendance filled out a form with relevant information concerning what a person can offer during times when volunteers are needed and what areas where they would be able to help out.

The next part of the program was presented by David and Melody Eishen on the use of Posse+Plus. The Posse+Plus program is to train every willing individual in Wood County to prepare for survival during and rebuilding after the impact of “the end of the world as we know it.”

The Posse+Plus program accepts the reality that federal and state resources are limited and can’t be depended on for survival, medical care or the security of the people of Wood County during and after a major incident.

Areas of training in the program include, but not limited to, food, water, communications, medical, gathering information, security and engineering to help build, improve and repair.

The organizing effort will continue with the selection of a board and grow from there. No date for a future meeting has been determined.
