Two lopsided wins keep Bulldogs in district race

The Quitman Bulldogs kept their playoff hopes alive with dominating wins of 13-3 win against Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill last Tuesday and a 14-1 victory at Winona Friday.

Tommy Drinkwine was on target giving up just one hit while striking out 10 Red Devil batters in the five-inning contest. Drinkwine walked just one batter while facing 20 batters in the contest called by the mercy rule.

The Bulldogs held a 7-3 lead before scoring six runs in a big sixth inning to close out the game.

The Bulldogs had 12 hits led by the hot bat of Justin Matthews who went 3-4. Matthews has been a consistent contributor to the offensive punch of the ‘Dogs in district play.

Landon Richey, Kamron Crockett and Davis Watson each had two hits. Watson’s double ignited the fifth-inning uprising by the Bulldog offense.

In the win at Winona, Quitman once again got great pitching and defense along with pounding out 14 hits.

Landon Green was superb on the mound holding Winona to three hits and one run while striking out nine in five innings.

Weston Pence pitched the final two innings for the save, giving up no hits and striking out three. Green also had two hits and three RBI. Payton Sapp and Richey each had a pair of hits.

As the season winds down, it will be up to the Bulldogs how they finish in the playoff run. In the final three games they face district leader Harmony, Winnsboro and Mineola to finish out the season.

Harmony and Winnsboro are at the top of the District 13-3A standings. Quitman, Mt. Vernon and Mineola are fighting for the third and fourth playoff spots.

After a home game Tuesday against Harmony on Senior Night, the Bulldogs travel to Winnsboro Friday and to Mineola for the season finale April 25.
