Two seek MISD board post

Two candidates are running for the unexpired term on the Mineola School Board, the incumbent and the prior office holder.

Jay McGough was elected to the board in 2018 and reelected in 2021. He resigned last year so that his wife could be considered for a nursing position with the district.

Todd Morgan was appointed to fill the post until the next election.

There is one year remaining on the term.

Morgan has been married to Tabitha Morgan, middle school art teacher, for eight years. They have three daughters, one son and two grandsons. Two of their daughters attend MISD.

Mr. Morgan has been in construction for 31 years and works in commercial sales. He serves and worships at First Methodist Church of Mineola and soon will be working on his certificate in Theology and Ministry through United Theological Seminary. He served as the director of Children’s Ministry at First United Methodist Church from 2019-2021. He is an active volunteer with G.R.A.C.E. Emmaus and is a graduate of Sam Houston State University (summer 2023).

McGough has been married to his wife Stacey for 13 years. They have two children, JD and Hannah. Both are students in the district.

Mr. McGough is a proud graduate of Mineola ISD class of 2001. He attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello and majored in history. He has been in the oil and gas industry for 17 years. He was vice president of the school board from 2019-22. He and his family are active members of First Baptist Church Mineola. He serves on the Mineola Hay show committee and as the Mineola FFA booster club president. He coaches little league baseball and flag football.

Two seats for a full term on the board drew no opposition to the incumbents, Rodney Watkins and the late John Abbott.

Early voting continues through Tuesday at the county elections office in Quitman.

Election day is Saturday, May 6 at Mineola City hall.

The Mineola city election was canceled, with no opposed candidates.
