Winona overpowers Quitman in lopsided district loss

Posted

Home court offered no advantage for the Quitman Bulldogs last Friday as they continued to struggle, eventually falling 69-25 to the Winona Wildcats.

Quitman struck first with a layup by Klayton Meadows, but Winona quickly found its rhythm. The Wildcats surged to a 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter, and never looked back. Winona dominated both ends of the floor, closing the opening quarter ahead 17-5.

The second quarter followed a similar script. Quitman was unable to slow Winona’s offense, and the Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 17-7 to take a commanding 34–12 lead into halftime.

Quitman attempted to rally in the second half, but continued to struggle from the field, scoring just seven points in the third quarter. Winona, meanwhile, had its most productive offensive stretch, scoring 21 points before turning to its bench with about a minute and a half remaining in the period.

The Bulldogs found little relief in the final quarter, managing only six points. Winona beat the Bulldogs 69-25.

Despite the loss, Quitman’s Matthew Moore provided a bright spot, as he saw significant action in the paint and contributed with baskets and rebounds while battling on both the offensive and defensive boards.

With the defeat, Quitman’s overall record drops to 2-19 and 0-6 in district play as the Bulldogs head into the final two weeks of the season.

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs did not play Friday night due to Winona’s varsity girls forfeiture.
