Tour de Pines offers four routes for cyclists of every experience level
Whether you’re an experienced cyclist looking for a long-distance challenge or someone who’s always wanted to try an organized ride, this year’s Tour de Pines has something for you.
The inaugural Tour de Pines will roll out Saturday, Aug. 15, taking riders through the back roads of Wood County while raising money for the Wood County Old Settlers Reunion Association (OSR). Proceeds from the ride will help the organization bring back a carnival midway for this year’s reunion.
OSR board member Brook Rogers is helping coordinate the event and serves as one of the main contacts for the ride.
According to OSR board member and Treasurer Joanne Wisdom, one of the most common misunderstandings is that the event is only for experienced cyclists.
“We actually have four route options,” Wisdom said. “Most people know about the 27-, 40- and 62-mile rides, but we also added a 15-mile route for folks who are new to cycling or just want something shorter and more relaxed.”
The 15-mile option was added after registration opened and does not appear as a separate choice on the registration site. Riders planning to complete the shorter route should register for the 27-mile ride and follow the clearly marked cutoff on event day.
“It’s a good way for someone to try their first organized ride without having to commit to a longer distance,” Wisdom said.
The OSR board has spent months planning the event, from mapping routes and setting up signage to organizing rest stops, support vehicles and volunteers.
OSR board members recently attended the long-running Tour de Paris to observe how the event operates and said they came away impressed by the welcoming atmosphere of the cycling community.
“It’s not a race,” Wisdom said. “It’s people who just enjoy getting out and riding together. Riders encourage each other, help one another out and enjoy being outside.”
The committee is still working through final details, including rider check-in, rest stops, route markings and support vehicles for anyone who needs mechanical support or a ride back to the finish.
While registration continues to grow, organizers are still looking for additional sponsors and volunteers.
“We’re still looking for sponsors and volunteers to help make this first year a success,” Wisdom said.
Volunteers are needed for rider check-in, rest stops, course support and welcoming cyclists back at the finish line. Local businesses are also encouraged to sponsor the event and help establish Tour de Pines as an annual tradition in Wood County.
With routes for beginners all the way up to experienced riders, organizers hope the inaugural Tour de Pines will introduce more people to cycling while also showing off the beauty of East Texas.
Registration is available through the Tour de Pines page on the Wood County Old Settlers Reunion Association website and at bikereg.com.
