Winter weather impacts region
A winter storm that moved in Sunday shut down much of Wood County and Northeast Texas on Monday as snow and sleet blanketed the region.
Fortunately schools, banks and government offices were closed due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday. Many other businesses also closed or curtailed hours as roads became slick.
The local MLK Day Unity in the Community service at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Mineola was canceled.
All schools in the county announced they would also be closed on Tuesday, and that basketball games scheduled for Tuesday evening would be postponed until Wednesday.
Late start times were also observed Wednesday.
The Wood County courthouse also remained closed on Tuesday.
Mineola and Quitman trash services were delayed by two days, with no service on Monday or Tuesday. Pickups the rest of the week were expected to run one to two days behind.
The storm saw temperatures drop below freezing on Saturday evening and were not expected to rise above freezing again until Wednesday.
Despite the cold, most roadways were beginning to clear by midday Tuesday as sunshine returned.
Temperatures in the low teens were seen overnight on Monday and Tuesday.
Quitman Fire Department battled a blaze at a home on S. Main St. Monday night.
