Wood County Arboretum to hold spring plant sale
Spring is here, and the Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is hosting its annual spring plant sale to help celebrate the season.
The annual event is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at 175 Gov Hogg Parkway in Quitman. It is a popular fundraiser to help plant enthusiasts create a fresh look in their landscaping using tested favorites that hold up to Texas conditions. An early bird, members-only sale is planned from 4-6 p.m. on Friday to kick off the occasion.
“We’re going to have a terrific sale this year and a wonderful selection,” said Garden Manager Lin Grado. “We’ll literally have perennials from A to Z available, from autumn sage to Zexmenia.”
A big push this year is offering plants that can be planted once and enjoyed for years to come: these include lantana, lamb’s-ear and whirling butterflies, said Grado.
“These types of plants are designed to bring color to the garden and attract pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds for years to come,” Grado said. “So, whatever your garden - sun or shade - we should have something to fit your needs.”
Shoppers can expect a varied selection of plants that feature dazzling colors and interesting textures, from coneflowers and yuccas to ferns and grasses.
A unique specimen included in the sale is the beautiful hybrid lily Caesar’s Palace, which is also featured in the arboretum gardens.
Arboretum memberships, which include benefits such as discounts at plant sales, start at $25 and may be purchased at the door both days.
“This is an important funding event for the arboretum,” said Deanna Caldwell, president of the all-volunteer Friends of the Arboretum. “Proceeds help us keep up the property so that it remains a beloved feature of the community for years to come.”
The group cares for the historic Stinson House and 23 acres of natural trails and gardens, which feature gazebos, pergolas and educational highlights.
