Wood County commissioners approve claims, set public hearings

missioners conducted routine business Tuesday, approving payments, recognizing a child wellness initiative and setting multiple public hearings for upcoming projects and regulatory updates.

Commissioners acknowledged several personnel actions within the Wood County tax office, including a retirement, a full-time hire and a position change.

Commissioners approved claims totaling more than $1.19 million, including $530,150 in payroll, $179,031 in health claims, $487,469 in accounts payable and $1,246 in direct claims.

A proclamation recognizing Every Kid Healthy Week April 20–24 was approved. The nationwide initiative promotes child health and wellness through activities focused on mental health, nutrition, physical activity and family engagement.

Local organizers outlined plans within Quitman ISD, including a student coloring contest tied to mental health awareness, nutrition education displays highlighting sugar consumption, physical activity initiatives and a family cooking class designed to encourage healthy habits and communication at home.

Wood County’s participation in a statewide opioid settlement involving six defendants was approved. The county is expected to receive about $9,700 as part of the agreement.

Commissioners authorized the sale of surplus scrap materials, including railroad iron that had been stored on county property for decades.

A grant through the Sabine River Authority Community Assistance Program to construct a new boat dock at a public access point in Precinct 4 was OK’d.

A report from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards confirming that recent renovations at the Wood County Jail meet state requirements was accepted, and it can be fully utilized.

Commissioners also approved an agreement to market county-owned property in Hawkins through an online auction.

Two public hearings were scheduled for May 26 regarding updates to subdivision regulations and infrastructure standards, including guidelines affecting manufactured homes and tiny homes.

During a separate public hearing, the development of  The Cottages at Black Corral, a 20-unit tiny home rental community in Precinct 1, was approved.
