Wood County Democratic Party awards scholarships to 14 local students

The Wood County Democratic Party has announced the recipients of the 2026 Dr. Charles Thompson Memorial Scholarships. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor who contributed an additional $6,000, the organization was able to award scholarships to all 14 student applicants this year.
Traditionally, the Wood County Democratic Party awards two $500 scholarships annually. This year’s additional funding allowed the organization to expand the program and recognize every student who applied.
The 2026 scholarship recipients are Piper Hallman, Isabela Hernandez, Braelyn Massie, Cadence Powell and Kaden Trimble of Alba-Golden High School; Nevaeh Roffman of Hawkins High School; Jadelyn Marshall and Sophia Mullins of Mineola High School; Kacey Myers, Annabelle Popek and Mason Williams of Quitman High School; and Nolee Carroll, Adlee Frazier and Porter South of Winnsboro High School.
The Dr. Charles Thompson Memorial Scholarship was established by members of the Wood County Democratic Club in honor of Dr. Thompson’s many years of leadership and service to Wood County. Dr. Thompson served as Wood County Democratic chair for more than 17 years, was the club’s first president and dedicated much of his life to education in several school districts, including Quitman ISD.
In addition to his work in education and public service, Dr. Thompson served as a legislative committee representative for the Texas Retired Teachers Association at the local, district and state levels. His commitment to education and community leadership inspired generations of students and residents throughout Wood County.
“Dr. Thompson believed deeply in helping young people reach their full potential,” representatives of the Wood County Democratic Party said. “We are honored to continue his legacy by supporting local students as they pursue their educational goals.”
Students from all Wood County ISDs are eligible to apply for the scholarship program each year.
