Wood County receives district realignment results

The biennial reshuffling of Texas high school districts by the University Interscholastic League led to some changes for local schools.

The realignments were announced on Monday.

Mineola, Quitman and Alba-Golden, along with Hawkins and Winnsboro, already knew they would remain in their respective conferences, 2A and 3A. However, Yantis learned in December that the Owls would drop back down into the smallest classification (1A) after being bumped up two years ago by a small margin.

Mineola and Quitman will see no changes to their football lineups, as District 7-3A in Division One will remain Commerce, Eustace, Malakoff, Mount Vernon, Rains and Winnsboro on the Yellowjackets’ schedule.

The Bulldogs will continue to face Harmony, Edgewood, Grand Saline, Lone Oak, Paris Chisum and Prairiland in District 8-3A Division Two.

Mineola and Quitman girls will no longer compete against one another in district volleyball.

The Lady Jackets will continue to face Edgewood, Eustace, Grand Saline, Malakoff and Winona, but Scurry-Rosser joins District 15-3A instead of Quitman.

Quitman shifts north to District 14-3A for volleyball against Commerce, Lone Oak, Mount Vernon, Paris Chisum, Prairiland and Rains (Emory).

Conference 3A basketball was also reshuffled, and Mineola and Quitman will be in a five-team district with familiar foes Winnsboro, Harmony and Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill in District 14. Gone are Edgewood, Grand Saline, Winona, Malakoff and Eustace.

Alba-Golden’s lineups are almost completely new.

Only Como-Pickton remains in the football district. Joining District 10-2A Division One are Cayuga, Frankston, Hawkins, Kerens and Price Carlisle. Exiting are Cooper, Honey Grove, Quinlan Boles and Rivercrest.

The loss of Yantis and Fruitvale, both of which dropped down to Conference 1A, means Alba-Golden will have volleyball district games with Big Sandy, Union Grove and Hawkins, along with Como-Pickton. North Hopkins moved out.

The basketball lineup for Alba-Golden is completely new, which means the Panthers will no longer trade blows with powerhouses Martins Mill and LaPoynor.

The basketball District 15-2A includes Como-Pickton, Cumby, Fate PTAA, Greenville PTAA, Merit Bland and Quinlan Boles. Cayuga, Crossroads and Frankston went elsewhere.

Yantis and Fruitvale will face off in volleyball but not basketball. District 22-1A volleyball includes those two plus Avery, Union Hill and Sulphur Bluff.

In basketball, Yantis’ District 20-1A slate will include Avery, Avinger, Bloomberg, Union Hill, Saltillo and Sulphur Bluff.

Alignments for remaining sports will be released later in the spring.
