A clean up and repair day is planned Saturday, April 30 from 8-11 a.m. at the Mineola Community Skate Park, corner of Stone and Walnut Streets.

Work includes trash clean up, painting the skate ramps and basic lawn care.

The Flint and Steel Coalition’s new skating program at Mineola Middle School has taken off, with 35 members and growing.

The club meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursday at 3:30 p.m., teaching life skills as well as skating skills in a curriculum named The Grind.

Students are loaned a skateboard, which they helped construct and decorate, helmet and protective padding, and upon successful completion of the program will be able to keep that equipment.

After the program many of the students head for the skate park to practice what they have learned, as well as assist with building new ramps and maintaining the park.
