Yellowjackets bust it open against Winona

The Mineola Yellowjackets jostled the line-up a bit in Friday’s 16-0 win over the visiting Winona Wildcats.

Kaden Bell was behind the plate, spelling Zack Haskins who went to left field. Bradyn Alley, who had played most of the season in left field, moved to first base. The remainder of the line-up was unchanged with Dalton Hamlin at second, Cason Davis at short, Jacob Castleberry at third, Brady Shrum in center and Trevor Singletary in right.

Enjoying another spectacular year on the mound, Spencer Joyner threw five hit-less innings against the Wildcats. He issued two free passes, while striking out eight. He faced only 16 hitters in five innings.

Coach Russell Bowker shared some pre-game comments about his squad. “They have weathered through some challenges, (two starters have transferred out of the program at the start of district play) but I am so proud of how they have simply kept playing quality baseball,” he stated. He especially noted the contributions made by the young players on the team – such as Trevor Singletary, Zack Haskins and Dalton Hamlin – and how each ballplayer has not only filled a gap, but has contributed in big ways to the season.

The Jackets put up four runs in the first when the Wildcats misplayed a groundball come-backer and two runs scored on a throwing error. With two away, Shrum then stroked a triple to the right-centerfield gap for two additional RBI.

Although Mineola put three runners on base in the next two innings, at the end of three complete innings, the score stood 4-0.

It was a 12-run fourth inning which sealed the game. Mineola rattled off nine base hits, including triples from Davis, Bell and Alley.

The Yellowjackets are playing fundamentally-sound, smart baseball. At this stage of the season, they have the unique luxury of putting nine good baseball players on the diamond, regardless of positioning.

After an away tilt at Harmony, Mineola hosts Quitman at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
