Yellowjackets host relays
Mineola freshman Raylie Peebles put her mark on the 2023 running of the Yellowjacket Relays. Peebles captured the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run, in times of 1:02.09 and 2:26.72, respectively.
The 400-meter dash final was a close finish, with Quitman’s Isis Murlin claiming third. Peebles gutted out a strong finish in the 800-meter clearing all competition by a large margin. Braleigh Wood of Quitman took third in the 800-meter.
Quitman’s Sadie VanderSchaaf also earned a blue ribbon with a high jump of five feet. The Mineola varsity girls 4x400-meter relay team was the best of the field and secured the top finish with a 4:12.65 performance. The time bested the second-place finishers by nine seconds.
Other top three finishers from Mineola and Quitman were Allie Berry, second in the triple jump; Caroline Castleberry, second in the 300-meter hurdles; Tanner Hartzog, second in the high jump; Shylah Kratzmeyer, third in the pole vault; Clara Marlow, third in the long jump; and Makena Quiambao, third in the discus.
With a dozen teams competing, points were difficult to come by. The overcast gave way to drizzle which presented a challenging environment for all competitors.
Three athletes managed to secure top three places for Mineola and Quitman in the boys varsity division. Quitman’s Dakota Jimenez secured third place marks in the 400-meter and 800-meter races with times of 54.26 and 2:05.92.
