Establishment of a Career and Technical Education (CTE) hub in Mineola took a significant step forward Monday when the MISD school board unanimously gave Supt. Kim Tunnell the green light to negotiate purchase of the former UT-Health clinic building just north of town.

The building, which is owned by UT-Health East Texas, would cost the school district about $150,000 in cash. UT-Health also would receive $300,000 in marketing considerations, which would include such things as naming rights and advertising. The roughly 7,000-square-foot building rests on about seven acres just north of Lake Brenda along Texas Hwy. 37. The building was once a clinic, but as of late it’s been used for storage.

The building could wind up being a permanent home for CTE classes or a temporary space.

“It could be short-term, but it also could be long-term,” Tunnell said after the meeting. more

For 47 minutes each week, more than 100 second-graders at Mineola Primary School learn the elementary building blocks of computer technology. The kids are a long way off from understanding how to write complex computer programs, but they do grasp a fundamental understanding:

“They realize they’re actually making things happen,” says Kaye Morris, a primary school technology instructor. “They see the end results of the sequencing.”

Across America, schools are investing in technological training and education of children at a young age. Mineola, which prides itself for its technological innovation in the classroom, is no different. It sees learning the language of computers as a foundational skill for competing in the world of today and tomorrow. more
